Pre-op Area

BackNext

This is the pre-operative holding area, also called "pre-op". If you're having a surgical procedure, you'll need to have an IV so the staff can give you fluids and medicine before, during, and after your operation. This IV can be started in your room, but in most cases it's started right here in the pre-op area. For small children, it may be possible to start the IV in the operating room when they're already a little drowsy from the anesthetic. You might want to discuss these options with your anesthetist.

If you've had any problems with anesthesia in the past, PLEASE be sure to tell your anesthetist. They'll be prepared to go over the basic risks and benefits of the anesthetic agents with you before giving you any medicines that would make you drowsy.

While you're on your way to the pre-op area, make a final check to be sure you aren't wearing any items such as false teeth, retainers, contacts, jewelry or hearing aids. If so, the nursing staff can store them for you while you're in the operating room.

You'll be given a hat that looks like a soft shower cap to wear. You won't need a mask, but all the staff members working in the operating room will be wearing them for your protection.

Make sure you have a plan for where family members and friends will be waiting during the procedure. Let the recovery room staff know ahead of time where they can be found.

Well, it looks like you're ready to move to the operating room, or the "O-R" as we call it. Take a deep breath and relax - our experienced staff will take great care of you!
